Award History of Clarence Kapay

Artist Clarence Kapay, a Day Star First Nation member, has accumulated several achievements in his relatively short career as a professional artist. Each award represents an important milestone in Kapay's professional development. His artwork represents a true passion and love of home and has set the standard for all artists.

2002

In October 2002, Kapay was honoured at the First Nations Awards ceremony with the Arts and Entertainment award. The Women of the Dawn hosted this event, and the ceremony honours the lifetime achievements of First Nations individuals from Saskatchewan. It was a humbling moment for Clarence as it is an acknowledgement of his work by his own people.

2001

In April 2001, Kapay's art piece "Visions" would be presented to Prince Charles during a royal visit to the Chili for Children Program in Regina, Saskatchewan. This was a momentous occasion that marked another significant achievement in his career.

2000

The year 2000 was very important for Clarence Kapay who was chosen for the Ducks Unlimited Canada's Art Print Portfolio 2000 and the 2000 ABEX Awards. He said, "I’m very honored and thank those responsible for choosing my work for these prestigious awards.” Each ABEX finalist received one of his “Dancing in the Night” limited edition prints.
Clarence was also Saskatchewan's lone representative in Ducks Unlimited Canada's Art Print Portfolio 2000. The Regina-based artist was only the second First Nations artist selected in Ducks Unlimited Canada's history. Kapay's image "His Domain" was one of 12 selected out of over 310 entries from across Canada. The chosen painting was reproduced in limited editions and available exclusively at Ducks Unlimited events in 2000.

1999

On Friday, March 19, 1999, Clarence was presented with the Tourism Saskatchewan Artistic Acclaim Award. He used his art to depict Saskatchewan to honour it both within and outside the borders.

1998

In 1998 Clarence Kapay received 1st place in the Animal Portraits Division in the 9th Annual “Reflections of Nature” Wildlife Art Competition and Exposition- Western Canada's Largest Wildlife Art show: Presented by the Saskatchewan Wildlife Art Association. In the same year, he created images for the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority’s advertising, of the book cover “Red Coats on the Prairies,” and on the covers of two compact discs.

1996

In 1996, Clarence acquired his Bachelor of Arts from the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College in Regina, now called The First Nations University. He then took 2nd Place at the 14th Annual Native Art Contest, a national contest held by Peace Hills Trust Education.
